New British Poetry Stars Reunited

Simon Armitage, Jackie Kay, Lavinia Greenlaw and Glyn Maxwell

Twenty years ago, four poets toured the UK under the banner of the New British Poets promotion, heralding the arrival of an exciting new poetry scene. it’s now 20 years on and at the behest of our Festival Laureate they are to be reunited for this special event in Durham. Are they older and wiser? What difference have the years made to their writing?

Welcome to Durham Book Festival 2010

This year's festival allows you to shamelessly indulge your passion for books and ideas in the beautiful surroundings of the city of Durham.

The festival is both a meeting of minds, with some of the most interesting and important writers of our times, and a fun mix of interactive events, live performance and special events; all carefully chosen to create a festival that engages with a wide range of tastes and interests.

So whether it's new novels that you're searching for, poetry that you'd like to hear, history you're into, or scientific endeavour that you'd like to explore, there's something here to spark your interest this year.

Many of Durham's magical buildings act as hosts for the festival events, including Durham Cathedral, where we will be presenting a very special launch night event and the Town Hall, where this year we are presenting a packed weekend of author events.

We are also delighted to present a new special programme of events for younger readers and their families during the half-term holidays. Taking in a range of themes and venues, this new festival strand hosts everything from baby animals and giant snails to Dr Who, and is not to be missed!

Durham is easy to get to by train or bus from York, Newcastle and Edinburgh, and offers a whole host of places to visit, including the world heritage site of Durham Cathedral alongside excellent shopping and dining opportunities once you are here.

Why not check out our special hotel deal with Radisson Blu and make a weekend of it? Details on our "Where to stay" page.
